Moabit Q&A

You may have picked up from my last couple of posts that I am now living in Moabit.

But when I tell people this, they're like:

Where the hell's Moabit????

Don't worry, I am here to shed some light on things.

Q: Where is Moabit?
A: It's that place wedged between Mitte and Charlottenburg. Some might say "the bit just south of Wedding". Others prefer to say "the area just behind Hauptbahnhof". Moabit is what you make of it, man.

If you're on the U9, you can get off at Westhafen, Birkenstraße or Turmstraße and be in Moabit. If you're on the S-Bahn running through Berlin's centre, get off at Tiergarten or Bellevue and cross the Spree, then you'll be in Moabit.

Q: What's it famous for?
A: Much like Leicester, my alma mater, Moabit is famed for its prison. It is also moulded around the Tiergarten and its younger sibling, the Kleiner Tiergarten. Depending on where you are, obviously, you are always a short walk away from the Spree, or the harbour that you generally only see if you are travelling on the Ringbahn.

The LaGeSo dominated Berlin and national headlines in summer 2015 (and thereafter) because of its dreadful living conditions for asylum applicants. That's located in Moabit.

Moabit is an island, too, as you can see from the diagram above. Someone even wrote a song about it, according to Wikipedia, but I can't find it anywhere on the internet.

I'm not painting a great picture so far, but stay with me.

Q: Why would I go there?

Depending on your personal interests and tastes, Moabit has some good community spaces:

That's not to mention the veggie food spots going on, too. I'm still in the process of exploring, but click here for the ones I've found so far!

There are also a few places where you can get great coffee in a cool setting:
  • Garcia
A good place to people-watch. They have vegan croissants, as well.
  • Spontan
This is a relatively new place with sweet and friendly staff! Their niche is coffee, board games and sushi...
  • Artworx
Good concept here: coffee and urban art. Peaceful and hidden.
  • Mauerwerk
Coffee by day, craft beer by night. What more could you want?

The other day, on the way to the bank, I saw a guy wearing a sweatshirt saying MOA BIT (stylised like RUN DMC). I've never seen anyone wearing a NEUK ÖLLN shirt.

Conclusion: keep an eye on Moabit.
